Youth Programs Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION:ย 

Wilderness Torah seeks a Youth Programs Manager to support nature-based, experiential education programs for youth grades 2-12. Our youth programs integrate caring mentorship and nature-based exploration with Jewish spirituality, tradition, and wisdom. Small groups are led by passionate mentors who create experiences that guide children through the nature-based rhythm of the Hebrew calendar. As theโ€ฏYouthโ€ฏPrograms Manager, you will use your skills in facilitation, relationship management, and organization to inspire your team, while growing a deeper connection to Jewish wisdom and identity.ย 

The Youth Programs Manager is responsible for managing Wilderness Torahโ€™s Bโ€™hootz (Grades 2-5), Bโ€™naiture (6th-8th), Neshama Quest and Shomrim (8th-12th) programs, and supporting the development and implementation of partnership programs with other Jewish institutions. These responsibilities include:

  • Managing a team of adult and teen mentors
  • Overseeing the logistical and programmatic implementation of in-person nature immersion day-long programs, camping trips, and backpacking trips
  • Supporting curriculum development for programs and staff training
  • Maintaining inventory and orderly storage of Wilderness Torahโ€™s program gear ย 

The goal of Wilderness Torah programming is to provide youth with meaningful, Jewish, and earth-connected experiences that will serve them in being whole, life-loving, community-oriented, eco-centric people. As the Youth Programs Manager, you are responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting mentors, ensuring program quality and smooth operation. You will manage all administrative aspects of the programs, being responsive to the changing needs of our community and families, by maintaining positive relationships and adapting programs as needed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manage Year-Round Youth Programs (Bโ€™hootz, Bโ€™naiture, and Shomrim)

  • Leads operational implementation of all programs
  • Participates in recruitment, training, and management of program mentors
  • Supports curriculum development with relevant Jewish, nature connection and Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion themes
  • Manages communications with families and stakeholders
  • Ensures program quality through site visits
  • Coordinates parent programs
  • Coordinates Institutional Partnership programs
  • Contributes to marketing and promotion of the programs

2. General Wilderness Torah Responsibilities

  • Support special tasks as needed and as available
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and periodic retreats
  • Participate in Cultural Evolution work that aims toward deeper collaboration, more equitable decision-making, and stronger cultural anchoring
  • Participate in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work
  • Engage as a thoughtful member of a small, innovative team and community

ABOUT YOU:

  • 3+ years experience working as a teacher or mentor; Jewish experience necessary

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Compensation and Benefits

  • Full-time, competitive nonprofit salary commensurate with experience. Salary range from $65,000โ€“$75,000

B’hootz Youth Mentor for Grades 2-5
Part-time

DATES: September 2025 – May 2026

Do you love working with youth in nature? Are you looking for part-tine work in the East Bay?

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Bโ€™hootzย is aย Sunday school in the woodsย for grades 2โ€“5 that runs 12 Sundays and 1-2 one-night camping trips Octoberโ€“May in East Bay parks. This program of Wilderness Torah integrates nature-based exploration within Jewish spirituality, tradition, and ethics. Small groups are led by passionate mentors who create experiences that guide children through the nature-based rhythm of the Hebrew calendar.

We seek an educator with 2+ years experience in Jewish and nature-based education to serve as Mentor for our Bโ€™hootz 2024-25 season. You will lead or co-lead a group of 12-18 youth each session, participate in curriculum planning, and interact with families.ย 

Pay commensurate with experience, between $25-$30/hour. This is a part-time, temporary employment role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Off-site

  • Collaboratively plan curriculum and prepare for sessions under guidance of Youth Programs staff
  • Communicate with staff and families as needed
  • Attend Wilderness Torah training days and team meetings

On-site

  • Lead small group and whole-group programming on 12 Sundays and 1-2 one-night camping trip
  • Mentor and guide youth, maintain safety and health of all participants
  • Supervise teen mentors
  • Attend staff meetings before and after program day

ABOUT YOU:ย 

  • 2+ years experience working with children in grades K-2 or 3-5 in Jewish and/or outdoor programs;ย 
  • Knowledge of the Jewish calendar and holiday cycles, stories, and values;ย 
  • Naturalist and wilderness skills knowledge;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team of youth mentors

Bโ€™naiture Youth Mentor for Grades 6โ€“8
Part-time

Would you love to guide middle schoolers through meaningful nature-connected experiences that support their personal development?

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Bโ€™naiture is a two-year, experiential program for youth ages 11-13 that uses nature as a vehicle to explore the transition from childhood to adolescence. Bโ€™naiture is forging a new Jewish pathway for nature and soul-centric Bโ€™nai Mitzvah.

This program of Wilderness Torah weaves Jewish teachings, story, and song with personal challenges, outdoor skills, non-parental mentorship, peer group community building, and nature awareness activities to provide an embodied way for youth to explore coming-of-age. Bโ€™naiture meets from Octoberโ€”May on six Sundays from 10:30-4:30pm in the East Bay Parks, six Wednesday nights in Berkeley backyards, and three weekend camping trips.

We seek educators with 3+ years experience in youth mentoring, nature connection, wilderness skills, and Jewish learning to serve as a mentor for our Bโ€™naiture program for the 2025-26 season. As a Bโ€™naiture mentor, your role is to provide nature-based games, challenges, crafts, stories, Jewish and nature-based learning, and help guide youth into their teen years.

Compensation: $26-30/hour

Pay is commensurate with experience; this is a part-time, contract role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend staff training weekend, additional trainings throughout year, and end of season staff debrief
  • Create plan in collaboration with lead mentors before each meeting
  • Participate in monthly staff meeting, and additional meetings as needed
  • Mentor and guide youth, maintain safety and health of all participants
  • Profile select group of participants- responsibilities include scheduling and following through on parent meetings and providing additional support as needed
  • Arrive promptly for each meeting- Sundays generally 9-5 and Wednesdays 4-8:30, and for set-up, clean-up and duration of camping trips
  • Respond promptly to e-mail correspondence from program manager and team

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPECTATIONS:

Head

  • A willingness to learn new things
  • Timeliness and foresight: able to arrive promptly and prepared with materials and teaching you have agreed to for each program day
  • A knowledge of and/or commitment to learning Jewish stories, songs, and teachings is helpful
  • Knowledge of the Eight Shields model desired
  • Knowledge of and experience with Rite-of-Passage desired

Heart

  • A love of and deep connection to the natural world
  • An ability to be a team player, as much of what we create is a collaboration of our ideas and experience
  • Excitement to cultivate community and cohesion amongst staff and participants
  • Experience and love of teaching, mentoring, and working with youth ages 11-13

Hands

  • Specific nature-based and wilderness skills you are excited to teach
  • Comfort with building and tending fire, basic whittling skills; music skills a plus
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds; able to be outside in various weather conditions, from very hot to extremely rainy and wet with a bright attitude that inspires the kids

ABOUT YOU:ย 

  • 3+ years experience providing either wilderness, nature-based or rites-of-passage programming
  • Naturalist and wilderness skills knowledge; experience teaching wilderness skills is a bonus
  • Knowledge of the Jewish calendar and holiday cycles, stories, and values; Experience teaching in Jewish education is a bonus
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team of youth mentors and can think on their feet
  • We are ideally looking for people who are interested in continuing on with us as mentors in the future.
