Holiday Observance
Shavuot is a two-day chag (holiday) observed from sundown Tuesday night through sundown Thursday night. If you would like to stay at Mt. Tam throughout the holiday, you are welcome to do so. When you register, you can purchase an additional ticket to stay through sundown on Thursday, which will include lunch and dinner on Wednesday and breakfast, lunch and dinner on Thursday, as well as campsite fees.
At Wilderness Torah events, we create pluralistic and inclusive community by keeping a kosher kitchen, for example. However, attendees span the spectrum of practice and observance, and we are flexible with certain halacha such as the use of instruments on Shabbat. If you have specific questions about halachic observance, please contact Zelig Golden at zelig@wildernesstorah.org.
Food and Kosher Policy
We will enjoy delicious dinner, all night snacks and beverages, and breakfast prepared with the help of the community. Everyone must bring their own plate, bowl, mug, wine cup, and utensils.
Shavuot on the Mountain is a pesca-vegetarian event, meaning food will be mostly vegetarian with some fish (which you may easily opt out of). In making its food choices, Wilderness Torah prepares food according to the highest ethical standards, including kosher, local, organic, seasonal, humane, and socially just. Wilderness Torah prioritizes sourcing fresh, unprocessed foods, and when choosing processed or packaged foods, aims to purchase certified kosher foods. Wilderness Torah may at times prioritize certain values, such as local or organic, over kosher certified. When such a choice is warranted, we will share such decisions openly.
We will try to accommodate everyone’s food needs to the best of our abilities; please answer the registration question regarding dietary needs. We can provide the menu upon request.
