The Central Camp

Camp will include a central area with a Tent of Meeting as a focal point for ritual and meals, additional shade structures for programming and meditation, a kitchen, hand washing stations, and camping toilets. Participants will camp along the perimeter or further from the central area.

Water

There is no running water onsite, so you must bring your own water. We will, collectively, bring all the water we need for drinking, washing hands, washing food, cooking, dishwashing, personal hygiene, fire safety, etc.  Please bring 2 gallons per person per day, or 8-10 gallons. We recommend buying a multi-gallon, reusable water tank instead of individual throwaway gallon containers.

Hand Washing Stations

Hand washing is very important as part of group responsibility; for the safety of everyone, please wash your hands after every time you use the toilet and before each time you enter the kitchen. Stations will be placed near the kitchens and toilets.

Toilets

Regulations require that we bring portable toilet boxes and carry out our solid waste. We will all have an opportunity to learn how to use and enjoy these “en plein air” facilities.

Trash

We will pack out all of our trash, recyclables, and ash. We will not leave anything behind, even ‘organic’ garbage such as apple cores and eggshells, since these are not native to the desert ecology. Due to climate and soil composition this matter does not break down and threatens the delicate balance of flora and fauna in the area.

Campfires

Campfires are allowed in established fire rings only, and extreme caution is necessary due to possible high winds. We will be limited to one central fire pit. Cutting or collecting any wood, including downed wood, is prohibited.  All firewood must be brought into the Wilderness Area and ashes packed out.

First Aid

There will be designated people at the festival who are trained in Wilderness First Aid, and there will be a first aid kit for emergencies.  Individuals are responsible for their own comfort and safety. It’s a good idea to bring your own basic first aid supplies for your convenient access (bandaids, alcohol wipes, etc). Each participant MUST fill out this medical and liability release form BEFORE the trip begins.

Desert Hazards and Safety Precautions

Keep an eye out for yourself and others:

  • Uneven terrain (slips, trips and falls) – Take a breath, stay aware, and slow down – that’s what we’re here for.
  • Sharp cacti of many varieties and sizes – there are not many cacti at this year’s site, but it is the desert, so they are around.
  • Dehydration – The air is very dry, even if you don’t feel hot or dry, so it’s important to KEEP DRINKING WATER even when you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Hygiene – Hand washing is very important; for the safety of everyone, please wash your hands EVERY time, AFTER toileting and BEFORE entering the kitchen/food areas.
  • Low visibility at night – Bring a flashlight or two and extra batteries, since we will be moving around in the dark.
  • Weather – Bring warm layers and bedding; tie down your gear so it doesn’t blow away in the wind.
  • Remote location – Plan to arrive in the light and bring everything you need with you.
