Avodah (Work Exchange) Program

Please read below for information about our Avodah program.

Avodah Bread

Please read below for information about our Avodah program.

PLEASE NOTE: Avodah applications are now closed.

Avodah is intended for those who want to serve and have financial need. Tu B’Shvat in the Redwoods is reasonably priced on a sliding scale. The low end of the sliding scale does not cover the full cost to produce the festival. With this in mind, we ask that you consider your ability to pay before applying for Avodah.

Avodah enables folks to help create the village, and is a great way to save money, meet new friends, and play an important role at the festival.
Each Avodah role is integral to the health of the whole system. Please read through our Avodah Terms & Conditions before applying for Avodah.
HALF Avodah 1.5 hours of service for a $20 ticket
FULL Avodah 3 hours of service for a free ticket
* Combine two HALF positions to create a FULL Avodah ticket

NOTE: All Avodah roles allow all people doing Avodah to fully participate in the seder and afternoon offerings, except the welcoming role, which involves missing a small portion of the morning seder.

IMPORTANT: Each Avodah role is integral to the health of the whole system. The hours you contribute with Avodah serve as payment for the event. When you do not show up, your absence affects many others. Therefore, if you do not fulfill your agreed hours, we will ask you to pay the difference after the festival at the rate of $20 per hour.

To apply for Avodah please read the position descriptions below and complete an application before February 8, 2017. You will hear back from us on a rolling basis within 1–2 weeks after you apply. If we are unable to offer you Avodah, you will still have access to the lowest prices on our sliding scale.

CANCELLATION: If you accept your Avodah position and register for the festival, and then cancel after February 3, 2017, you will be required to pay the lowest adult registration fee ($40) and will not be allowed to participate in Avodah during future events until the fee is paid.

You’ll find a link to the application at the bottom of the next section. Please read the position descriptions first before filling out an application.

Pricing Philosophy

Read below for information about our pricing philosophy.

A: Wilderness Torah strives to provide the highest quality experience at the most affordable price, allowing our programs to remain as inclusive as possible. Our festivals are unique and incredible experiences, made possible by the priceless contributions of everyone there.

The reality is that program fees typically make up 40% of our income; we raise the other 60% through grants and private donors.

Do you know foundations or individuals who would be interested in helping fund us? Please let us know — or make a donation today.

In 2016, our flagship festivals, Passover in the Desert and Sukkot on the Farm, each cost about $90,000 to produce. Although it is more sustainable for nonprofits to rely more heavily on program fees to earn money, Wilderness Torah is dedicated to keeping our prices as low as possible. We offer Avodah (work exchange), sliding scale rates, and family discounts.

A: Real cost is Wilderness Torah’s break-even point — how much it costs per person to put on our programs. Tu B’Shvat in the Redwoods costs us $100 per person to put on; however, we aim to make our festivals as financially accessible as possible and offer a sliding scale below this price so everyone can attend. Please choose the highest price you can afford.
A: Creating a program from scratch requires a lot of resources! We do everything we can to keep expenses low. The program fee includes all the background work to create the village experience, as well as almost everything you’ll need at the festival:

  • Organic local food and beverages for the seder, youth programs and afternoon offerings
  • Adult seder programming
  • Afternoon learning
  • Youth programming
  • A part of eight staff members’ time — the equivalent of one full-time staff member for a year — to plan and manage the festival, from logistics to marketing
  • daily meditation and movement opportunities
  • permits, site fees, insurance, storage, transportation infrastructure, fuel, and other overhead costs
  • and so much more
A: We are blessed to have a wonderful community of volunteers for each of our festivals. Along with our Avodah program, volunteers help us reduce costs.

We also offer a sliding scale fee structure, as well as optional discounts for families and adults age 60+. We are committed to enabling those with fewer financial resources to be able to share in this community.

We thank you for looking honestly at your ability to pay as close to the high end as possible; when you register at a higher-price level, you enable lower-income members of our community to register at fee levels they can afford.

For those for whom the lower part of the scale is still out of reach, we make an effort to offer extensive Avodah opportunities. These make up nearly a third of all registrations.

A: Please take a moment to think about what this kind of unique celebration means to you. If you are able, please pay at the high end of the sliding scale. We appreciate your generosity and understanding of both the value and cost of this amazing program!

If you are able, you can also make a tax-deductible donation in addition to your program fee to help us continue to offer affordable programs.
